Joy Unspeakable and Love Unfathomable...
The Story of Mephibosheth
In the midst of hearing the birds sing in the early morning hours, I found myself contemplating the wonderful and limitless love of God. And as I did this, I was reminded of the story of Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 4 & 9) who was crippled from youth from someone dropping him as they were running for their lives. I believe the story of Mephibosheth is a prophetic statement of God and how he operates in our lives. When we are lame (from a variety of ways), from our own choices or from other’s choices against us, or when we are distant from ever feeling a part of a family, not to mention God’s family, here is a story of the King, remembering his covenant and summoning his servants to go and get Mephibosheth, now an adult, to live at the King’s house, to eat at the King’s table and to be considered a part of the family…..adopted in to the King’s household. What love is this! And yet, I believe if we dig deeper into God’s word, we will discover that it is the journey of what Jesus has done for us. Jesus, sent from His Father, to come and bring us to His Father’s table and to be adopted in to His family. Even when we are lame and unable to get there by any means of our own doing, Jesus comes and rescues and redeems us. Through His laid-down life, he gives us new life and a new family, at His Father’s House, which happens to be the King of the Universe. What love, what splendor, what gratitude overflows when we discover this.
Jesus, give us eyes to see all that you have done for us and how you have called us “accepted into the beloved”, into your belovedness and into your beloved family.
How thankful we are. May we live our lives saying thank you. Amen.
